This five minute video that reveals the offshore rocky reefs of the sanctuary: Rittenburg Bank, Cochrane Bank and the Farallon Escarpment. Corals and sponges provide valuable refuge for fish and other marine life. Information on these animals helps establish the ecological importance of deep-sea communities and identify threats they face. Potential threats to the health of sponges and corals include natural physical disturbances and human-caused disturbances, e.g. oil spills, marine debris, benthic fishing gear, climate change and ocean acidification. Still images of these creatures can be found at SanctuarySIMoN.org. (Select from the Locations drop-down list: GFNMS, Rittenburg Bank, Cochrane Bank or Farallon Escarpment.)
